The Ups and Downs of Lisbon
Lisbon, Portugal |
Lisbon, Portugal
I’m been exploring the different ways to get up or down the hills of Lisbon.
There are escalators in the metro station, funiculars, elevators, trolleys and just plain stairs!
Metro escalator pictures cannot capture the whole rise as there is a turn. But imagine six flights of escalators to get you up from Baixa to Chiado – I got dizzy just looking down to take the picture!
The Elevator St Justa is from 1902, and you travel up as a group in a 12 foot square car to the walk way point. You can then climb up a very narrow staircase to the upper platform, and I wasn’t the only one who felt my knees go weak from feeling vulnerable!
The Gloria and Bica funiculars are used by the locals, with a few tourists thrown in. Lots of graffiti on the trains, walls, everywhere.
