Faro, Portugal
It was a huge 36 minute train ride this morning from Tavira to Faro. I could have done it on a day trip, but this way I can see the city during the day, and then go out again later. These towns really come to life in the evening. People are out walking, shopping, eating.
Faro has a complete walled old town inside of town with three entrances. Many towns have remnants of walls, so it is very interesting to see how enclosed it feels.
Faro has an airport that many northern Europeans fly into on their way to the sun spots, but it doesn’t feel like the town is swamped with tourists. Of course, being off season it is lovely. I would not recommend coming anywhere near the south of Spain or Portugal in July or August.
